Come From Away - Phoenix Theatre
In early 2018 word first emerged of a West End transfer for another Broadway hit, following in the footsteps of myriad shows that have made the transition across the Atlantic. This time the story concerns real events, which provide the backdrop to a heartwarming story full of hope in the face of adversity, and its reactions in New York should spell big things at the Phoenix Theatre.
Come From Away is a musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who have plucked an uplifting story from the horrors of 9/11 and provided international audiences with a compelling and memorable experience. It will be directed in the UK by Christopher Ashley.
The show is set in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11th 2001, focusing on a community in Canada that experiences many (so far) little-told stories. The nature of the attacks meant that flights were grounded across the country, with those already in the air diverted from their intended destinations. Newfoundland was the eventually destination of many of these flights and the communities would eventually welcome the passengers with open opens, coming to their aide and showing a caring and heartwarming side to an otherwise-horrifying day.
That story has won over the hearts of North American audiences, with theatregoers expressing great joy at its story and musical numbers ever since it first appeared in Canada in 2013 (having been developed since 2012).
It gained its Broadway premiere in 2017, with audiences relishing in songs like 38 Planes, Darkness And Trees, Lead Us Out Of The Night, Stop The World and Something’s Missing, amongst others. With an onstage band leading the musical numbers, it will provide something special for those headed to the Phoenix Theatre.
Its world appearances began in Canada, progressed to the US and now make the journey across the Atlantic, playing in both Ireland (Christmas 2018) and London (2019), with an Australian production also planned. So this is a worldwide success story in the making and one that West End theatregoers are not going to want to miss.
Come From Away is the latest musical to head to the Phoenix Theatre, playing at the West End location for performances from Wednesday 30th January 2019.
