Follies - Olivier Theatre, National
The classic Sondheim musical Follies returns to the stage in early 2019 for its latest run of performances. Having previously enjoyed a major revival in 2017 at the Olivier National Theatre, this show now returns to the same location to give theatregoers another chance to experience the classic and beloved show.
The story follows different couples who were previously a part of a musical revue called the Weismann’s Follies as they reunite at an old Broadway theatre in the early 1970s. They will enjoy one last party there before the venue is torn down and during the course of the show we will explore the relationships and the trips down memory lane.
Sondheim’s classic was first seen on Broadway in 1971 and has been seen around the world, leading to the successful revival at the National Theatre in 2017. With a talented cast working under the direction of Dominic Cooke (the latter of whom returns to direct in 2019), it managed to introduce a new generation of theatregoers to something that has inspired and influenced in the years since it was first seen. It’s no wonder, in that case, that it won two Laurence Olivier Awards and was nominated for a further eight.
With a memorable story and toe-tapping songs, this is one of Sondheim’s most famous shows and stands up alongside other classics of his to attract audiences from all over the world whenever it returns to the stage.
So expect big things as Follies makes its latest appearance on a London stage, running at the Olivier National Theatre for performances from Tuesday 19th February 2019 (previews from Thursday 14th February 2019).
