A fresh call was made today to legalise cannabis sales in the UK to try to disrupt criminal gangs. Crispin Blunt, chairman of the  All-Party Parliamentary Group for Drug Policy Reform, is urging the Government to control sales as he claims that 50 years of “prohibition” has failed  “lamentably”. The Tory MP’s warning comes as NHS figures show a significant rise in under-19s admitted to hospital because of severe disorders caused by the drug.» more

Labour MP Virendra Sharma has become the latest politician to lose a vote of no confidence tabled by local party members. The MP for Ealing Southall lost by 41 votes to 18 in a row over him allegedly not attending his constituency meetings for almost two years. The motion against him was tabled by Left-wing activist Rheian Davies, who is a local organiser for Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign group Momentum. She said the move against Mr Sharma came from all sides of the party and she laid the motion on behalf of union delegate branch Unite’s legal workers.» more

Protecting the United Kingdom is the “big issue” for the Democratic Unionist Party rather than backing a “toxic” deal to get Brexit over the line, senior MPs said today. They warned that they would not agree to Theresa May’s Brexit plans unless the threat from the Northern Ireland border “backstop” to the UK’s integrity was neutered. Jim Shannon, DUP MP for Strangford, accused the Prime Minister of having failed to deliver on his party’s “red line” for changes to the backstop to ensure Northern Ireland would not be splintered off from the rest of the UK.» more

After another chaotic night in the House of Commons, MPs voted on an amendment to take control of the parliamentary timetable, in a move that hasn’t been seen in over a century. There were 29 Tory MPs who rebelled against their party by voting for the amendment. Now a series of votes will be taken in the House of Commons, starting on Wednesday, which will put forward amendments to the withdrawal agreement. They could include a second referendum or a Norway-style deal which would leave the UK in the customs union.» more
